< New Ohio Poll on Iraq Sets Context for Brown-DeWine Debate | 10 a.m. Start Time for MTP (Almost) Live Blog >

Love the criticism of "cut and run."

Dewine distances himself from Bush immediately by disavowing the term (defense).

Smooth transition to arguments against date-specfic withdrawal.

The opening question on Iraq to DeWine on whether he agrees that the Dems want to "cut and run" is quick pressure on Dewine to decide whether or not he is with Bush or against him.

His answer is long but effective in ways, but he's not really differentiating himself from the president on the substance of Iraq. The no hard date point he's making is nothing new.

To the "what is the Democrat's plan?" question. "What do we do now?"

"Dewine and the administration want the status quo" Brown is obviously making a conscious effort to link Bush and Dewine.

Brown handled a hard question about his vote against the "87 billion" dollars. He handles the questions pretty well given the heavy ad campaign on the issue. I think this is a great chance for him to respond to these questions.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:15:45 AM EST

The 'you voted against $87 billion" thing is the same as Kerry on the voted against before voted for it -- people vote in congress against lots of versions of bills.

It will be interesting to compare the topics in this debate with the topics from previous debates in Ohio held by DeWine and Brown.

They are all getting a little tense and they are having a hard time getting a word in edgewise. Russert changed the subject from funding to blowback, which is something Dewine has a harder time answering.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:18:11 AM EST

Brown's favorite line for tieing DeWine and Bush together is:

"When Mike DeWine and George Bush took their initial oath of office on the same day in 2001..."

Watch to see if he uses that later in the debate.

Brown is making some sharp jabs at Dewine. The word failed is being used over and over. He asks who we trust to handle the War on Terror. Brown is framing Dewine as the Status Quo.

Unbelievable, also a repeated word.

This is quickly devolving into a shouting match. Brown is looking kind of pushy. But they both are being kind of snappy.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:24:35 AM EST

Getting rude.

And Dewine seems to love to claim numbers of votes that Brown made that fit Dewine's definition of bad votes.

Painting Brown as more liberal than Kerry, Kennedy, etc.

"We are not in Iraq for the Iraqis, we are in Iraq for us"

This is kind of well harsh.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:26:50 AM EST

Russert brings up Iraq polls -- the Iraqis want us out.

Dewine says we're there for us, not the Iraqis. Brown does not walk through the door.

"So much for spreading democracy as our #1 goal in Iraq."

This should have been Brown's response.

Ohioans do not support immediate pullout of troops however, see my recent post on the Ohio Poll released this week showing 60-40% Ohio voters favor staying until the situation has stabilized.

Dewine doesn't have confidence in Rumsfeld. Clearly, trying to distance himself from Bush.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:30:10 AM EST

The Iraq segment was fairly long. That's where he had to make hay? Foley cannot be something Brown and Dewine really disagree on.

Economy is the other area Brown emphasizes. We'll see.

Brown's issues in Ohio are trade, the economy, prescription drugs, education and - did I mention trade.

Iraq may not work to Brown's favor in Ohio, as Ohio, according to recent polls, deviates from much of the rest of the nation.

Russert question there cannot help Dewine? Just mentioning it links him. Brown can't be hurt by this.

So far Russert has not broached one topic that favors the incumbent.

Tough question to Dewine on Republican corruption in  Ohio.

He doesn't really answer the corruption question effectively.

Brown does a pretty good job linking Dewine to corruption, he could do a better job hitting this home.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:35:11 AM EST

This issue should work for Brown. Next debate he should put thought into finding a way to drive it home.

He highlights his votes against ANWR, etc. He's playing a lot of Defense.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:37:17 AM EST

Effective debaters move questions to their favorite topics. Brown did that with corruption, linking it to jobs, outsourcing, trade agreements.

Dewine forced to play defense.

by Ross Smith on 10/01/2006 09:37:30 AM EST

Brown has very little time to respond and he seems pressured. He's making some good examples of places hurt by problems with job loss.

Dewine back to the tax cuts. Interesting.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:40:43 AM EST

Lots of yelling about ad campaigns and other things. Its hard to say what the preception of this kind of animosity will be.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:42:28 AM EST

Voting records for and against Bush -- Dewine is trying, in his campaign to distance himdelf from Bush but Russert won't let him.

Brown's has another favorite ploy where he tries to tie DeWine to Bush.

He uses his opposition to NAFTA where he "stood up to the President of my party."

This not only is a popular stance in Ohio, opposing trade agreements, but also demonstrates that he did something that DeWine has been unwilling to do with President Bush.  That's when DeWine usually mentions ANWR.

Russert calls it the closing statement as Dewine claims to be bpartisan and says Brown is "on the fringe of his own party."

Russert shows some very stark statistics about in regards to bipartisanship. These show that Brown votes almost always Democratic and Dewine almost always Republican.

I think this question may favor Dewine due to his high profile compromises with Democrats and how he has  voted against Bush in a few key areas. This is clearly Dewine's strong point.

Brown is "a partisan" he is "on the fringe," Dewine is painting Brown as an uber-liberal.

Brown is only ok in responding to the "you're on the fringe" comment. He gets back to his voting record and some bipartisan actions he's taken.

I think Dewine ended a little stronger than Brown,  at first glance.

by springse on 10/01/2006 09:47:37 AM EST

Not sure if there are any. Russert calls Dewine's last, uninterrupted, comment a closing comment and then gives 25 seconds to Brown.

Brown then gets interrupted by Dewine. Smoth move by Dewine?
