Arizona Gubernatorial Debate- 10/10
This debate took place at the University of Arizona on October 10th and was aired on C-Span on October 17th.
: Arizona, Janet Napolitano, Len Munsil, Barry Hess
What struck me most about this debate was the charm of all three candidates: incumbent Dem Janet Napolitano, republican "challenger" Len Munsil, and libertarian "hopeful" Barry Hess. Spurred on by a lively (mostly) student audience, the three candidates debated about how best to deal with education (university tuitions, voucher/charter programs, adult ed, etc), growth, controlling the border, and taxes. Their arguments were accessible; their answers were straight-forward, and their views divergent. It seemed that deciding who won this debate would coincide with one's political affiliation; all three candidates did a respectful job of representing their party's philosophy. The candidates exchanged harmless and often funny barbs throughout the evening while remaining civil to one another (perhaps due to the large gap in the polls). Although it appears that Napolitano has already ran away with the race, I feel, based on this debate, that the state of political discourse in AZ is a healthy, lively, and engaging one.
