Liveblog of GOP YouTube Debate

Begins with irrelevance, distortion and the unverifiable: Anderson Cooper says we got 2000 more questions for this than for the Dem debate (crowd cheers as if that is a tribute to the GOP) and then says these questions were very different, too (unverifiable and the real point is that CNN may have changed their standards for how they select questions, going so far as to say they will not use questions on gays or abortion, issues the GOP has beaten like a drum in recent times). The real difference is in what is selected.

They start with a commercial about all of the questions that were submitted and pay homage to GOP trunped up fears of bad questions. Say they will not use kids, etc. and no animals, etc. STUPID.

They found an inside baseball song! Not really a question, just a way for Anderson to frame the debate.

He claims they were not a sanctuary city but then lists the exceptions. He is on the defense from the start.

Mitt gets to answer and says they called it a sanctuary city. Gets applause for calling undocumenteds illegal.

Mitt Romney and Gulianni are at each others throats and its only the first question. This is off to a great start.

Now I'm wondering what'll happen when Huckabee enters the conversation...

by Andrew Hoffman on 11/28/2007 08:16:25 PM EST

Hits back and calls Mitt's home a sanctuary mansion!

Mitt gets applause for telling the truth, then Rudy calls Mitt holier than thou.

Mitt's cross ex question gets back at him again.

Be the debater you want to see.

by Ross Smith on 11/28/2007 08:16:38 PM EST

Like Tim suspected, the candidates would have a big ol' debate about immigrations. I was way on Giuliani's side with his first speech- as a debater, I admire a three point speech style where each point strengthens the whole. However, Romney got him good, and Giuliani wasn't able to respond quickly enough.

Pledge to veto "amnesty"?

Thompson, yes.

Thompson looks very wrinkled and old.
Then calls out Mitt for flip flop and Rudy for Kerik (indirectly) and says Rudy fought in court for sanctuary city.

McCain -- yes (and gets jeers because he has a position that does not call it amnesty).

McCain now saying the public does not trust us because of failure in Iraq and Katrina, not going to help him  . . .

What happened to his charisma?

Tell Tancredo to be quiet; he's not even relevant anymore!

by Lauren Orsini on 11/28/2007 08:23:43 PM EST

I never thought I would see the day that McCain was the old softy on the GOP stage.  And his shout out on how he won't "demagogue" on the issue is a welcome meta-criticism of the debate on this issue.

by damien on 11/28/2007 08:25:24 PM EST

John McCain is weak on this issue, he cannot persuade the audience as well as Mitt Romney, even Rudy Giuliani.

by William Hutabarat on 11/28/2007 08:26:00 PM EST

Immigration questions asked from the dark.

Republicans have a problem with lighting or just with showing their faces?

Hunter and Tancredo get to talk.

Hunter "Built that border fence" as if you had not heard and it's a "double fence" as if he doesn't repeat that at least twice in every debate.

If I need a fence built I will call him. Especially if I need a double fence.

Be the debater you want to see.

by Ross Smith on 11/28/2007 08:26:19 PM EST

Hunter makes the common fallacy of confusing correlation with connection.  How do we know that the fence was responsible for the decrease in crime?  The statistic does not speak to the effectiveness of the fence in particular.

by Matthew Baker on 11/28/2007 08:27:21 PM EST

More evidence for the CNN/framing arguments oft-made on this blog; the question just asked was essentially "do you like illegal aliens that steal our jobs or children of our soldiers that are protecting us?"  Red meat for the GOP, but Huckabee sounded pretty good in response.  Closer to McCain then Tancredo, at least.

I haven't been impressed with the question selection so far.  Most of the questions have been angry and poorly worded.

by damien on 11/28/2007 08:29:25 PM EST

I would pay GOOD money to see Huckabee pick some lettuce!

by Lauren Orsini on 11/28/2007 08:30:34 PM EST

For Huckabee from a young woman on tuition for aliens and asking if vets get the same.

Mitt -- you called Huckabee a liberal on immigration. Mitt says it reminds him of liberals in Massachusetts (and gets applause).

Tells Mitt we are a better country than to punish children for what their parents did (bigger applause).

Mitt claims it is about limited tax money.

Be the debater you want to see.

by Ross Smith on 11/28/2007 08:31:16 PM EST

I was wondering how Huckabee would be able to stand up in this first debate where he's really relevant and he went toe-to-toe with Mitt Romney and at least held his own. Impressive.

by Andrew Hoffman on 11/28/2007 08:32:01 PM EST

Will there be any questions from Paul's supporters? Or do they not meet CNN's criteria for real GOP questioners?

And crazy. That too.

Apparently Ron Paul hates international organizations.

The line that really struck me as odd is "This nation goes to war under UN Resolutions." Um... then explain Iraq.

by Andrew Hoffman on 11/28/2007 08:33:58 PM EST

Ron Paul is talking about the 'North American Union'; with NAFTA and the NAFTA superhighway as key examples.

The NAFTA superhighway story was nicely debunked in The Nation a few months ago:

http://www.thenation.com/do c/20070827/hayes

Required reading.  Nods towards some of the reasons why people think there is a superhighway but dispels the idea that there's one in the works.

by damien on 11/28/2007 08:35:05 PM EST

Anderson Cooper sends it to McCain (a softball since McCain brings it up whenever he can).

GOP like the Abramoff reminder from McCain? Abscam anyone?

Mitt gets to join in for some reason. Says we need to "go after entitlements" but may not want to get too close to the third rail.

by Matthew Baker on 11/28/2007 08:40:22 PM EST

Thompson not answering, just saying reform Social Security. Claims OMB has a list of 100. Can't name one. Back to medicare and social security.

Paul: yes, I can name three and Washington did not change me. D of Ed, Energy, and Homeland Security. Plus cut out of military intervention.

Huckabee: the IRS. Fair Tax.

Thompson says Rudy never met a gun control law he didn't support.

by Matthew Baker on 11/28/2007 09:13:06 PM EST

Giuliani goes for the federalist angle with abortion. Very republican!

Once again, I like Giuliani's debate style. He makes a general statement, and follows it up by detailing the specifics.

by Lauren Orsini on 11/28/2007 09:13:13 PM EST

Ron Paul says no federal abortion police. He should make more of his ObGyn qualification. Says the doctor should be punished, it's up to the states and he is not running for governor.

Thompson says Roe v. Wade should be overturned and then it goes back to the states. Says use the same approach as now used for illegal late term abortions.

Rudy would you sign a federal ban on all abortion? Gets applause for saying no because it is a state issue.

Mitt says he agrees with Thompson. And says he would be delighted to sign that bill.
