Romney making headway in Iowa.
First, National Journal's "Hotline" (subscription required) on February 6th reported that Mitt Romney is the first potential Republican presidential nominee to have a profile and a recruitment drive on the social networking site Facebook.
The New York Times analyzes an obstacle to the Romney candidacy- namely the wariness of many Americans to elect a Mormon president. According to the Times:
Polls show a substantial number of Americans will not vote for a Mormon for president. The religion is viewed with suspicion by Christian conservatives, a vital part of the Republicans' primary base. Mr. Romney's advisers acknowledged that popular misconceptions about Mormonism -- as well as questions about whether Mormons are beholden to their church's leaders on public policy -- could give his opponents ammunition in the wide-open fight among Republicans to become the consensus candidate of social conservatives.
Another problem encountered by Romney is his apparent change of heart in regards to campaign-finance reform. Alexander Bolton of The Hill writes:
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who strongly criticized campaign-finance regulations in a private meeting with House conservatives last week, once touted dramatic restructuring measures such as taxing political contributions and placing spending limits on federal campaigns.
On the positive front, The Des Moines Register reports that Romney has doubled his support in a poll of likely Republican caucus-goers in Iowa (from 5% to 11%).
That's it for this week. Sorry for the short entry, but look for next week's more indepth coverage!
