Romney Weekly Update 3-22
Mitt makes few friends in Miami...
And then tries to make up for it.
Paying for the student vote?
Mitt loves Rocky?
Do they really need missionaries in Bordeaux?
No more Hitler comparisons!

During a speech to the Miami Dade GOP 3/9, Romney "describ(ed) the socialist saying 'Patria - muerto, venceremos" as "inspiring" and "claiming the phrase was swiped from liberty-seeking Cubans by leftist admirers of Castro." He also "bungled the names of prominent Cuban" GOPers, calling FL House Speaker Marco Rubio, "Mario."
"But" it was Romney's use "of an infamous Fidel Castro line that sparked the most controversy." Romney: "Hugo Chavez has tried to steal an inspiring phrase -- Patria o muerto, venceremos. It does not belong to him. It belongs to a free Cuba." However "scholars and prominent Cubans contend the saying has always been a Communist rallying cry." State Rep. Rene Garcia (R), who attended the speech: "It means communism. It means Fidel Castro. It's a communist catch phrase."
In taking a glance at Romney's own press releases, he seems to be attempting to cover his bases after his Miami-Castro gaffe. The titles of a few of the newer releases? "South Florida Leaders endorse Governor Mitt Romney" and "Governor Mitt Romney on the Fourth Anniversary of the Castro Regime's Crackdown on Pro-Democracy Leaders"
In a continuing attempt to scoop up the support and help of college students, today's "Hotline" reports that Romney's campaign has unveiled a new program which encourages college students to help fundraise for Romney by promising them 10% of what they raise.
On the Left, Daily Kos had a post about Romney's past support of Denver Mayor Rocky Anderson, a frequent and loud opponent to the Bush administration. It concludes with
The wingers aren't going to like this one. How many strikes like this one does Romney get before he loses all support to the "Draft Thompson" effort?
Also, The New Republic's "The Plank" blog took a jab at Romney's discussion on "Larry King Live" of his Mormon missions overseas. Isaac Chotiner, author of the post, opines:
It is indeed tragic that so much of the world doesn't have the same freedoms and conveniences that America does. Whole continents are filled with the scourges of disease and poverty. I'm just glad that Romney got a small taste of how so much of humanity actually lives.
Anyhow, where exactly was he?"I was in France. Bordeaux, Paris, all over France. A great learning experience to live overseas."
In the mainstream media, a story broke about how a member of Romney's finance committee contributed money to a PAC which funded an ad comparing Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) to Hitler during the 2006 campaign:
John Rakolta said he and other Republicans unwittingly paid for the ad with contributions to Voice the Vote, a Detroit-based political action committee. The full-page ad last summer featured a photo of Hitler and urged black voters to reject Granholm's 2006 re-election bid. The ad included a swastika and photo of Granholm, who defeated Republican businessman Dick DeVos in November.
Rakolta has denounced this attack, adding that he no longer supports the Voice the Vote PAC.
