Romney Weekly Update 3-29-07

DNC already starts the attacks

Romney not on board with the Iraq timetable.

Romney falling behind in the polls...

But he's not the only flip-flopper

A Mormon in the White House?

The Democratic National Committee released a stinging press release on Mitt on March 28th.  Entitled "Money Can't Buy Mitt Love", the release attacks Romney for what they perceive as multiple attempts by his campaign to buy support.  This scathing attack begins:

If desperate times call for desperate measures, smooth talking Mitt Romney must really be feeling the heat. His presidential campaign floundering, Romney is resorting to cynical efforts to buy off supporters and pay volunteers.

From Romney's website, he released a statement regarding the House of Representative's vote to establish a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq.  He says:

The Democrat Congress' maneuver to micromanage our military efforts from their offices on Capitol Hill, along with the fiscally deplorable action of loading up a wartime spending bill with pork barrel earmarks unrelated to our military's fight against terrorism has provided the American people with yet another example of the Washington mindset run amok.

The latest USA Today/Gallup poll isn't the most positive news for Romney: he only has 3% of the vote, finding himself behind Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Fred Thompson (who has yet to announce he is running), and Newt Gingrich (who also has not announced he's running yet).  This is his worst showing yet, which might be attributed to the introduction of Fred Thompson on the scene.

On the conservative side of the blogosphere, Ramesh Ponnuru of National Review responded to fellow conservative blogger, Phillip Klein of The American Spectator and his assertion that, although both Giuliani and Romney have flip-flopped on issues, Romney's are worse.  Klein asserts:

I wouldn't hold Giuliani up on a pedestal to be beyond any form of political posturing, but at the same time, at least he hasn't completely remade himself on every issue, and is still willing to stand up and say he disagrees with the conservative point of view sometimes...He's not simply making a list of the right conservative issues and checking off that list one by one, which is what Romney seems to be doing.

Ponnuru answers with:

Philip Klein argues that his candidate's flip-flops are less extensive and brazen than Mitt Romney's. Extensive, I'll agree with. Romney has flip-flopped on more issues. But I think Klein underestimates how brazen Giuliani's flip-flop on partial-birth abortion was...Klein's aversion to flip-floppery has reached the perverse point where he essentially extols Giuliani's non-conservative positions as reasons for conservatives to support him, because at least he's sticking with them.

National Review Online editor Kathryn Jean Lopez interviewed radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt about his recent book A Mormon in the White House, which, obviously, discusses the prospect of a Mormon president.  Lopez asks Hewitt if he's sold on a Romney presidency, to which Hewitt replies

His capacity to lead in these very difficult times is I think unquestioned, and his ability to absorb information, assess options, and make the right --though difficult-- choice is to me certain, and his ability to think through these very complicated problems is very unique. Time and again I would pose a very tough question to Romney and he'd answer in a way that demonstrated to me the sort of smarts plus instinct that we will need in the White House.
