Beating around the "Bush."  Get it...

by dbernick on 07/23/2007 07:01:55 PM EST

The frontrunners of this debate will have make their distinctions here for the public, since this is an engagement of the public more directly then ever before.

This might hurt well known candidates like Obama or Clinton by making the lesser "famous" candidates like Dodd or Richardson.

Achieve strength through peace...his family is in the war on terror?

by Shelby Pryor on 07/23/2007 07:09:27 PM EST

Kucinich emphasizes his connections to military in stating his opposition to war.
Hillary says we're united for change - can't take another 4 or 8 years of GOP leadership - question is who is ready to lead on day one. She says I am.
Barack says not just a GOP problem - both parties need to change - change in attitude of those representing people of America - that's why I don't take PAC money or special interest money - that's what people are looking for.

Adrienne F. Brovero Debate Coach University of Mary Washington

by Adri on 07/23/2007 07:10:08 PM EST

Q- How are you better than the rest?

Kucinich - I'm the only one who has voted against the war. We need strength through peace

Clinton - 35 years of experience to bring people together

Obama - This is a problem for all parties, we need a change in attitude. We need the pressing issues to the front.

by ScottBrown on 07/23/2007 07:10:46 PM EST

Dodd thanks the audience to get a head start in public appeasement. With 30 years of experience has he changed enough with America to be an effective candidate?

Obama, will his smiles and "new perspective"  outweigh the experience of the former Dodd?

Kucinich: Firmly declares his duty and honor towards Iraq.

Strength through peace?

I was wondering if this debate would strive to give the candidates all equal time to answer questions. Apparently not. Its already the Obama/Clinton show.

by Jane on 07/23/2007 07:11:07 PM EST

Their picking questions directed towards specific candidates rather than the collective group, is their a point being made based on those who are not getting the media attention?

by Shelby Pryor on 07/23/2007 07:11:31 PM EST

H says: Originally meant you stand for freedom, but now a word turned on its head to describe being for big government. I prefer word progressive - someone who believes strongly in individual rights and freedoms, finds ways to help those who may not have all the advantages in life. I consider myself a proud modern American progressive.

Adrienne F. Brovero Debate Coach University of Mary Washington

by Adri on 07/23/2007 07:11:34 PM EST

While Hillary might not think "liberal" and "progressive" go together, wordnet.princeton.edu does (see the second to last entry)

progressive--
# favoring or promoting progress; "progressive schools"
# favoring or promoting reform (often by government action)
# (of taxes) adjusted so that the rate increases as the amount of income increases
# a tense of verbs used in describing action that is on-going
# gradually advancing in extent
# liberal: a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties
# advancing in severity; "progressive paralysis"

Audience response here in WS to the "white hair" joke video--

by Jane on 07/23/2007 07:16:27 PM EST

  1. Biden's quick answer to a non-traditional "Republican running mate" was quick demonstrates strong preparation for possible questions.

  2. Candidates (note Edwards) are good at grabbing vague intros to questions to include points they want to make.  If questions avoided long intros it would make this more difficult.

by Stefan on 07/23/2007 07:17:34 PM EST

Anyone else noticing Obama's tendency in changing the question towards his strong points?

by Shelby Pryor on 07/23/2007 07:19:10 PM EST

Reparations for slavery?

Edwards says he is not for reparations. But there are other things we can do to create equality. For example, in Charleston, mortgages are more costly for African Americans. What we need is someone who can take these people on - drug companies, big banks...etc.

Obama - says reparations we need, e.g. in SC is right here in our schools. "Corridor of shame" - school buildings built after civil war. Places like this all across the country - these are the reparations that will really difference.

Anderson asks if anyone is for reparations. Kucinich says yes. We need to have a country that recognizes we have ineqaulity of opportunity and we need a prez who needs to challenge that.

by Alex Alchemist on 07/23/2007 07:20:29 PM EST

The candidates have stock answers and they simply work to make a connection between the stock issue answer and the premise of the question....not actually answering the question. "Was Katrina a race issue" A: It was devastating. Thank you, we knew that.

by Shelby Pryor on 07/23/2007 07:23:32 PM EST

It is interesting how Anderson spun the question to act as if it was a random question, but the truth is that CNN chose the question. Interesting....

Edwards - Better for women?
He believes that anyone who isn't considering voting for Obama/Clinton because of race/sex, shouldn't vote for him.

  1. We should raise minimum wage.
  2. More women in poverty, we need to get these women better health care through universal health care.

Clinton - Is Edwards better for women?
I have spent my entire life advocating for women's rights.

by Shelby Pryor on 07/23/2007 07:30:08 PM EST

Kucinich - Yes. Because if our Constitution means something, it should apply equally to everyone.

Dodd - How would I want my daughters treated if they grew up gay? They ought to have civil unions. But not so far as marriage.

Richardson - I would level with them - do what is achievable. Full civil unions. Hate crimes law. Repeal DADT. No tolerance of any discrimination in my administration.

by groundreport on 07/23/2007 07:33:40 PM EST

I think that the biggest change so far is that instead of having Anderson Cooper ask questions about race, sexual preference, gender issues, etc... the youtube videos force the candidates to confront people who inhabit those particular perspectives. For instance, when the Reverend from Hickory stands up in the audience, there is no way for Edwards to avoid it. The audience here in the auditorium is responding to the questions when they are asked by people who are clearly represented by the question. That is something that Anderson cannot achieve very often.

Hillary - Yes. Public service awesome.

Barack - Yes. Will send message to my daughters they've got obligations.

Scrap or revise?

Richardson - I would scrap it. It doesn't work. One-size-fits all, unfunded mandate, doesn't emphasize disabled kids, English-learning kids. Penalizes schools that don't do well. Key to good education is strong teacher. Minimum wage of $40000 for teachers. Emphasize Science and Math. Major federal program for arts in schools.

Biden - It was a mistake. [Plays Wellstone card - shout out to progressives] Start from beginning. Better teachers, smaller classrooms. My wife's a teacher and she says it doesn't work. Fundamentally change the way we approach this.

by Stefan on 07/23/2007 08:23:25 PM EST

Edwards - All 4 public school. Emma Claire and Jack here.

Hillary - Chelsea public school in Arkansas, private in DC because media.

Obama - UC Lab school because 5 mins from house. But there should be good schools for all kids. Ordinary parents who can't work the system can't get their kids into a good school.

Biden - Private, because my wife and daughter were killed right after I was elected, sent my kids to Catholic school because my sister cared for them.

Kucinich - Columbus public schools.

Gravel - Public and private. We need competition in our ed system. Abominable that 30% of kids don't graduate - both parties to blame.

Dodd - My daughter goes to public pre-school. NCLB needs to be fixed. Invest in schools. Accountability important - shouldn't scrap that.

45 million uninsured - universal coverage?

Obama - My mother had cancer when she was uninsured. Everyone has a plan for universal coverage - we had plans before with Democrats in control in the 90s - drug companies, insurance companies had veto power - can have a seat at the table, but they can't buy every single chair.

Edwards - Doesn't cover everybody. Millions suffering so badly. I went on a 3 day poverty tour. A man went 50 years in the richest nation on the planet because he had a cleft palate. When are we going to do something about it? We have got to stand up to those companies. We should be outraged by these stories.
