Debates as Education Tools - Previewing upcoming Florida Atlantic Debates

Two presidential debates are scheduled for next week at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton Florida. The Republican presidential debate, scheduled for a week from today, Jan. 24, and there is still hope the Democratic candidates will agree to debate on Jan. 27.

The debates are being framed as educational opportunities for students on campus and beyond. (Civic events precede presidential debates at FAU)

Many of their efforts can serve as models for college classes across the country.

The FAU official debate page  provides details, calling the week prior to the debates: "Join It! Civic Engagement Week at FAU." Committees of students and faculty are hosting a series of events, including a kick-off by Comedy Central's "Indecision 2008" a "mock debate" in which student representatives of the Republicans and Democrats will stand in for candidates, and workshops on such things as "How to Watch a Political Debate."

, has helped put together aspects of the educational thrust and is introduced by the FAU media page: "an associate professor in FAU's School of Communication and Multimedia Studies. He is a former assistant debate coach at the University of North Carolina and at the University of Kansas, and also a former director of debate at Wake Forest University."

Dr. Williams' lays out plans for student involvement in an editorial entitled "Presidential candidate debates at FAU should be educational as well as having public relations value" appearing in local papers and the Miami Herald.

He also makes use of local television to draw attention to educational efforts.
