Striving for DC Area Voters, Steele Makes "Purple Line" an Issue

Behind in the race for the open U.S. Senate seat in Maryland, Republican Michael Steele has evidently targeted the Maryland suburbs of Washingto, DC, as where he might sway some votes from Democrat Ben Cardin to himself. In the only debate televised within the DC media market, Steele began questioning Cardin about the DC suburbs. Steele's goal was to point out to DC suburbanites that Cardin, from Baltimore, did not know the DC area as well as Steele did. Steele succeeded, but, then, a day later, lost the advantage he gained.

Maryland Senate Debate Fizzles; 3rd Party Candidate Faults Cardin

Larry Young, host of a WOLB-AM radio show, had hoped to have an on-air debate among candidates for the U.S. Senate from Maryland. However, the major candidates, Republican Michael Steele and Democrat Ben Cardin, were not available on the same mornings. Young then opted for separate interviews with these candidates as well as with third party (Green, Populist, and Libertarian) candidate Kevin Zeese. Zeese accused Cardin of backing out.

Cardin vs. Steele Debate Matches Ad Strategies

The October 3rd debate between Democrat Ben Cardin and Republican Michael Steele for the U.S. Senate from Maryland saw both men do, in person, what their television advertisements were already doing in the Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC, markets. Cardin tried repeatedly to associate Steele, whose ads don't even mention that he is a Republican, with President Bush. Steele tried to position himself as an agent of change and Cardin as part of a corrupt establishment. Beneath the surface were their appeals to the state's African-American voters.
