Obama: A Great Debater

I've often thought that Barack Obama may be a better debate coach than a debater.  In this space I even questioned his debate preparation.

I turned out to be wrong.  He is both a great coach and a great debater.

If you've watched the 20 democratic debates, you've seen the maturation of Barack Obama from a relative novice to a "great debater."  He's figured out what few ever do - and that is the best strategic and tactical position is to speak in the language of the judge and judge the debate as you go along.  In a 2005 article in the Debater's Research Guide, I argued that debaters should learn to speak in the language of the judge.  Obama did that tonight and more.  Over the past two month's he's been framing himself as the best debater and that's worked well for him.

A Blizzard Predicted - Handicapping Tonight's Democratic Cleveland Debate

The weather forecast for Cleveland tonight is another brutal winter day with eight inches of snow. Many predictions for the debate from Cleveland State University at 9-10:30 on MSNBC (ET) hint that the encounter will be equally nasty.

On the trail over the weekend Hillary Clinton threw down the gauntlet with the line "Meet me in Ohio and let's have a debate about your tactics and your behavior in this campaign." [earlier blog entry on challenge]

Certainly there is much to debate given the "issues" dominating the contest since a Texas debate last Tuesday: Mailers, costumes, celestial intervention, utopia vs. "get real,' commander-in-chief, Union & 527 advertising. If the debate devolves into a debate of "tactics" it would indeed provide fireworks. The press would love that debate but it is unlikely, not serving either candidate's purpose.

Also unlikely is a repeat of the Texas love-fest with negligible policy distinction. Smooth sailing does little to recast the choice, suggesting the Clinton campaign cannot afford mixed story-lines of attack and cooperation. The latter will undoubtedly be Obama's motif, only leaving Clinton to continue the assault if the race is to be impacted.

Assessing media predictions - after the fold.

The Presidential Debate Season Continues - Debating more Debates

The primary debate season may never end. CNN has proposed holding two nationally televised debates from Ohio on February 27 (Democrats) and February 28 (GOP). This would be CNN sponsored 12th and 13th debates.

If the nomination process has not finalized by the end of month, candidates may be forced into yet more shared appearances. Perhaps CNN is buoyed by attracting 8.3 million viewers  for last Thursday's Hollywood debate.

Also developing is a debate about which debates: Texas vs. Ohio/CNN vs. MSNBC.
